Indiana, a state known for its rich history and diverse culture, recently made headlines by unveiling its new branded welcome sign. The decision to change the iconic sign that greets visitors at state borders was met with anticipation and curiosity.

Let’s Talk Logistics

INDOT and the IDDC plan to install 19 newly branded “More to Discover IN Indiana” interstate signs by May 26th and 57 more entry signs along non-interstate routes by the end of June. In total, the signage will cost about $43,000, according to an INDOT spokesperson.

A Welcoming Transformation

The decision to update the welcome sign stemmed from Indiana’s desire to refresh its brand image and better align it with the state’s evolving identity. Although steeped in tradition, Indiana representatives believed the old sign no longer accurately represented Indiana’s vibrant culture, natural beauty, and economic progress. Recognizing the need for a change, the state launched an extensive design process involving input from various stakeholders, including residents, business owners, and tourism officials.

The new branded welcome sign is intended to reflect a modernized vision of Indiana. Embracing the spirit of progress and innovation, the sign now features a sleek design that reflects the dynamic energy of the state. In addition, the sign’s bold lettering, adorned with a touch of modernity, and the warm-hued color pallet exudes friendliness and approachability.

Public Perception

Since unveiling the new branded welcome sign, public perception has been diverse and intriguing. While some individuals embrace the change as a positive step towards revitalizing Indiana’s image, others feel nostalgic for the old sign. It is crucial to acknowledge that change often evokes mixed emotions, and these differing opinions highlight the significance of the sign as a symbol of identity and pride for residents.

Many proponents of the new sign praise its contemporary design and its ability to showcase the state’s vibrant character. In addition, supporters argue that the sign’s fresh look has the potential to attract more visitors and generate increased tourism revenue, benefiting local businesses and communities.

Governor of Indiana, Eric Holcomb, stated

We are proud to begin this project in three key locations throughout the state, with the vision of all of Indiana’s entryways featuring the IN Indiana logo as a welcome to the Hoosier state.

On the other hand, critics of the new sign express concerns about the departure from tradition. Some individuals feel that the old sign held sentimental value, and changing it undermines the state’s historical roots.

Notre Dame Alum, Paige DeVoe, stated

The old sign is a lot more welcoming. It makes you feel like you’re welcomed to Indiana. It has the state right there. The new sign says more to discover, which is great, but it doesn’t really give you that home kind of feeling when you’re coming back to Indiana.”

However, it is essential to note that the new sign does not erase Indiana’s history but seeks to present it more dynamically and engagingly.

Aesthetics

While some find the warm color palette and modern font appealing, others believe it lacks the timeless elegance of the previous design. These subjective opinions reflect the diverse tastes and preferences of the public, further emphasizing the need for open dialogue and understanding during times of change.

Indiana’s decision to unveil a new branded welcome sign has generated a range of public opinions, reflecting the dynamic nature of identity and design. By embracing a contemporary vision while maintaining elements of tradition, the state aims to reinvigorate its image and draw attention to its cultural heritage, natural landscapes, and economic progress.

As time progresses, the new branded welcome sign will become integral to Indiana’s identity, and public perception may evolve. Regardless of individual opinions, it is crucial to appreciate the effort made to modernize the state’s image and recognize its value.
